Noah and Rachael // Engaged // San Diego, CA

Rachael is one of my dear friends that I used to go to school with at Cal Poly SLO, and we met in finance class! If someone would have told me at that time that I would be a wedding photographer shooting Rachael’s wedding someday I would have been ridiculously confused and probably laughed in their face. In a nice way.:)Rachael and I didn’t meet until our last quarter at Cal Poly but we happened to have two classes together: Entrepreneurial Finance and Case Studies in Finance… oh the joys of those classes, ha! We had some mutual friends and hit it off right from the start. At graduation she took a job with Deloitte in Orange County while I took a seemingly insignificant photography internship at Hume Lake Christian Camps… and then when I moved back to Irvine we just picked up right where we left off. Her friendship is SUCH a gift, and Rachael is one of the most caring, giving, warm-hearted friends I’ve ever known. And then this guy Noah came into the picture and getting to watch their relationship grow has been such a blessing. They got engaged on Valentine’s Day in San Diego so we did their engagement pictures in Balboa Park and Coronado Island where he proposed! He’s been so fun to get to know and they just compliment each other PERFECTLY. They are getting married at the Rancho Bernardo Winery in October and I can’t wait!

Kelli and Darwin // Engaged // Silverado Canyon, CA

Winter (or Southern California’s version of it…) is definitely over! It’s been so warm and this weekend was no exception… I was a bit worried that the engagement session I had scheduled with Kelli and Darwin would leave us all melting but thankfully that wasn’t the case! I was so excited to hang out with Kelli and Darwin a bit more, and they even gave me complete freedom to choose whatever location I felt inspired to shoot in. The only request was to include some breathtaking scenery:)So, after searching high and low for the perfect place I finally found it… but I’m going to keep it a secret! It’s one of those places that feels very similar to the last shoot with Kenna and Gray; beautiful light, untouched nature, and is just one of those places that you can breathe a little deeper in. Kelli and Darwin were incredible troopers, hiking all over the place with me even when it came time for Kelli to wear her black heels! They were just such a joy to work with and I am counting down the days for their wedding in La Jolla. Here are some of my favorites!

Karey, loved the pictures. I am Kelli’s sister and her matron of honor. I had a hard time picking one to order. Looking forward to the wedding!

Gray and Kenna // Irvine Area // Part 2

Here is round TWO of Kenna and Gray! We had too much fun at our last shoot, and figured hey why not do this again? So we did! We headed over to Black Star Canyon for some sweeping canyon views and they switched up the wardrobe a bit… and hello classy! It was a blast and I would shoot with them every week if they would let me. Here are some favorites!

They are all great but that 3rd one is ridiculously insane!

Gray and Kenna // Orange, CA // Part 1

It’s been awhile since I’ve been shooting consistently and to get back into the swing of things with these two could not have been any more fun or inspiring! Gray is an avid mountain biker and both he and Kenna love being outdoors almost as much as they enjoy each other… which is a lot. Not in a like-each-other-so-much-you-can’t-stomach-it but just the opposite… in the you-know-you’re-going-to-have-fun-and-be-inspired kind of way. Their fun together is infectious. They are both really passionate about nature, and volunteer for taking care of the birds at Rancho Las Lomas which I just think is the coolest thing… that means they get to help out with the bird releases and to hear Kenna talk about it, I could tell it was one of those things that just grabs your heart and and never lets go once you experience it. For their engagement shoot they chose the locations and they were a breath of fresh air… literally. Orange County has so much beauty in its open spaces, some precious untouched nooks and crannies that provide the most amazing escape from that darn traffic and busy-ness!

They brought their vintage bike, and I thought it was the perfect backdrop for a little ring action…

Kenna is a super talented hair stylist so if you are needing one, she is the girl you want to go to! I know I’m going in to see her soon, my hair is in dire need of a hair cut:)

This isn’t the last you’ll see of them, we have another shoot coming up here shortly that I’ll post soon and you won’t want to miss it!

Jessica Vanlandingham - April 24, 2009 - 5:11 pm

I will take Kenna’s name and number. Her hair looked beautiful and I was just thinking I wish I knew who did it!!! Can you ask her if I can have her info for when I start booking people!?

Karey Michelle - April 24, 2009 - 11:42 pm

Sure thing Jess!

A New Beginning!

Welcome, welcome!! I am so excited to launch this new blog and mark a new chapter in my business and life! The first couple years of my business were absolutely amazing and I’ve been incredibly blessed by its quick growth. It happened so quickly though that I needed a couple months to decompress a bit… and as you could probably tell from my blog hiatus I took a chunk of time off after my Papua New Guinea trip last November. What a gift that was!

Here is a fun little exercise someone shared with me… if you were to take a second and write down the five most important people in your life, who would you write down? Do you have the list figured out? I’m really serious! If so, take a look over it. Is your own name on the list? If you did the same thing as me, then the thought didn’t even cross your mind. But, think about it… if our own cup is running empty then how much are we able to give of ourselves to the people that matter the most to us? So, go back over the list and put your own name at the top. Weird, huh? Strange but extremely empowering. Taking that time off was the best thing I ever could have done for myself and for my art. I can’t recommend it enough.

So, I’m back in the blogging world and ready to go with a new joy and fresh perspective. I figured that having a new blog was just the perfect way to signify a new beginning… and it’s just fun! I hope you enjoy it and let me know your thoughts, your comments, anything you want to share. And then give yourself a little time off… go make a cup of tea, grab a book, read my blog (haha!), or do nothing at all… and enJOY!:)
